A history of the Moultonborough Police Department.

The History of the Moultonborough Police Department begins in 1924 when George Stimpson, was recorded as the first Police Officer in the Town’s Annual Report.

The Moultonborough Police department’s budget for fiscal year 1925 was ten dollars!

It was a time when crooks could pretty much do as they pleased in between the years of 1930 to 1933. There were no police officer appointments recorded in the Town’s Annual Report for those years.

In the years of 1966/67 Law Enforcement received a boost in the town of Moultonborough, when the New Hampshire State Police moved its barracks in Wolfeboro to Moultonborough.

In 1968 a mile stone in Moultonborough Police Department history is made. Frank McIntire is the first police officer to hold the title and rank of Chief of Police. Prior to this the title of Chief of Police was reserved for and held by the Chairman of the Board of Selectmen.

In 1971 Martin Clifford was hired as the first full-time police officer/ Chief of Police.

In 1972 Moultonborough Police Department expands its full time ranks to two officers.

In 1973 Clifford resigns as Chief of Police and Leonard Smart is promoted to that position.

In 1976 the Moultonborough Police Department again expands its full time ranks to three officers with the hiring of James E. Woodman.

In 1978 Chief Smart resigns as Chief of Police and James E. Woodman is promoted to that position.

In 1982 the Town of Moultonborough bids farewell to the State Police Barracks as they moved to their current location in Tamworth.

In 1985 and 1986 the Moultonborough Police Department once again under goes expansion to 5 and 6 full time officers respectively.

In 1992 Corporal Richard M. Young is named D.A.R.E Officer of the Year for the State of New Hampshire.

During 1995, Chief James Woodman, a 19 year veteran of the department retires and Sgt. Richard Young is promoted to Chief of Police. Also, using U.S. Department of Justice C.O.P.S. Grant funds, the police department expands its force to seven full time officers.

In 1998 Chief Young resigns and Lt. Scott Kinmond is promoted to Chief. Also, during this year the Moultonborough Dive Recovery Team is formed providing a much needed service to this waterfront community.

In 1999 members of the department establish the Moultonborough Police Association. This organization is committed to raising funds and establishing programs to benefit the police department, and all community members with emphasis towards Moultonborough's children. The police department also expands its ranks to eight full time officers this year.

In 2001 the department adds another full time patrolman's position for a total of 9 full time officers. Also, through the generous donation of a local resident, the department acquires a patrol boat which will be used to service the Dive Recovery Team, provide faster response to island resident complaints and address the increasing numbers of boat and watercraft complaints by citizens.

2003 is another landmark year for the police department. The police and fire departments move into their newly constructed public safety facility at 1035 Whittier Highway, across from the Berry Pond Motel and Maurice's Restaurant. Built with an eye toward the future, this beautiful facility will serve the residents and visitors of Moultonborough for many years to come. Also, the first full time dispatcher is hired to staff the new dispatch center.  Sergeant Shawn Varney is appointed to the position of Asst. Commander for the Central NH Special Operations Team and Officer Jason Boucher is appointed an alternate member of the team. Officer Jody Baker is appointed to the newly created position of School Resource Officer.

2004 The department has now expanded to 10 full time certified officers. MPO Wayne Black and Cpl. Tom Dawson completed three extensive crash investigation and reconstruction schools over the past two years to become the department's first certified accident reconstructionists. They are now members of the Belknap County Technical Accident Reconstruction Team which will provide many resources to the department in the investigation of serious motor vehicle crashes.

The office of Chief of Police was not made a separate entity in the Town until 1968. In that year the first police officer held the rank and title of Chief. Prior to this year the Chief of Police was that person who held the position of Chairman of the Board of Selectmen. The town during these years employed police officers who answered directly to the Board of Selectmen. In 1970 the town hired the first full time Police Officer/ Chief of Police.
