Our K-9 - Rony

K-9 Rony is a six and a half year old male German Shepherd. Rony was born in the Czech Republic where he received basic training in obedience, tracking and apprehension. Rony’s Czech name is Teo.

Rony was brought to the U.S. in 2004 from the Czech Republic by Castle’s K-9 Inc., based in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania who specializes in training police dogs for many specialized applications. Rony joined the Moultonborough Police Department as the department’s first K-9 Unit in 2005, through many generous donations and grants. First teaming up with Master Patrol Officer James Obrien. MPO Obrien and K-9 Rony had many successful tracks, drug finds and apprehensions during their service together.

K-9 Unit functions:
  • Routine Patrol
  • Detection of Illegal Drugs
  • Tracking suspects/lost/missing people
  • Detection of suspects hiding in buildings, cars, wooded area
  • Handler/Officer protection and suspect apprehension
  • K-9 demonstrations for numerous organizations, schools and clubs
K-9 Rony and Officer Kessler In 2007 Rony took on a new partner Master Patrol Officer Stephen Kessler, when MPO Obrien transferred to the Wolfeboro Police Department to start Wolfeboro’s first police K-9 Unit. MPO Kessler and K-9 Rony went back to school and received their first of many patrol certifications together from the North American Police Working Dog Association (NAPWADA) and The United States Police Canine Association.

K-9 Rony is a dual purpose patrol dog trained in both drug detection and patrol work. K-9 Rony is trained to detect 5 different illegal drugs, tracking people, apprehend suspects and handler protection.

Over the years MPO KESSLER and K-9 Rony have maintained a high standard of preparedness through constant training with the New Hampshire Working Dog Foundations Police K-9 Academy. MPO Kessler and K-9 Rony have also been operators on the Central New Hampshire Special Operations Unit and are currently one of two K-9 teams on the Belknap County Special Operations Unit (Swat Team).

Over the past three years as a team MPO Kessler and K-9 Rony have continued the success of Moultonborough’s K-9 unit with many successful deployments both in town and throughout the state.
